ANIMAL MASK MAKING & PERFORMANCE

Discover the magic of mask making in this immersive workshop with String and Shadow Puppet Theater, led by artist Emily McHugh.

Over the course of two intensive sessions, participants will explore the fundamentals of mask construction, using accessible materials like clay and masking tape, and paint to create their own animal alter ego mask. Guided through this collaborative project from design to completion, participants will learn sculpting techniques, work with clay and paint, and learn to embody the mask in a parade setting. The workshop will culminate with an opportunity to display participants’ art during the Aire Craft Festival Street & Sky Parade on August 15th & 16th from 1-3pm in downtown Issaquah. Participants will animate their creations as part of this vibrant public celebration! This workshop is perfect for artists, educators, and anyone interested in the intersection of theater, visual art, and play. No prior experience is necessary—just bring your creativity and community spirit!

Prior to the workshop, participants will be asked to provide three images of the animal they would like to make so the teaching artist can prepare in advance to support their journey.
